“Gurken-Alex”: Coburg Original (*1884; +1960)
Alexander Otto was a bookbinder by trade; likely due to health issues, he became a street vendor. He sold haberdashery like shoelaces or band-aids, but eventually focused on selling pickles, known as 'Kümmerlinge.'
Otto sold his goods at fairs and festivals in the Coburg area, and also on the streets and in pubs of the fortress town. His presence in Coburg, his quick wit, and dignity made him a well-known figure—also known for his love of playing skat.
After his death on March 23, 1960, a monument was erected in his honor on April 18, 1986, in Herrengasse.
