Coburg town hall

Administration building

Originally, the town center of Coburg was located at the church square in front of today’s Morizkirche, where the first town hall stood. With the planned expansion of the city and creation of the present-day marketplace, relocating the town hall made sense. By 1414, it stood at its current location.

At the end of the 16th century, Hans Schlachter expanded the building toward Ketschengasse, adding a spectacular oriel with rich ornamentation—including sculptures of Saint Maurice and the architect himself.

In 1752, both halves of the building were unified with a Rococo-style façade. Since then, the town hall has had its iconic triangular gable, topped with a statue of Saint Maurice known as the 'Sausage Man' (a legend claims the length of Coburg sausages is based on his marshal’s baton, though this is just a tale).

In 1904, Max Böhme redesigned the façade in Neo-Rococo style.
