Prince of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld; Imperial Field Marshal (* 1737; + 1815)
Prince Friedrich Josias was the youngest son of Duke Franz Josias of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. He entered Austrian military service and fought as a cavalry officer in the Seven Years’ War against Prussia. He participated in many battles (e.g., Lobositz, Liegnitz), was wounded, and distinguished himself as a regimental commander.
In 1766, Maria Theresa promoted him to major general. Under Emperor Joseph II, he fought in the Turkish Wars. After defeating two superior Ottoman armies at Focșani and Mărtinești, his fame became legendary.
During the French Revolutionary Wars, he became Imperial Field Marshal and commander of the Imperial Army. He defeated French forces at Aldenhoven, Neerwinden, and Leuven, and captured Maastricht and Aachen.
Due to poor health, he eventually resigned and spent his final years at Bürglaß Palace in Coburg.
